Reglan Warnings and Precautions

by Steve Fields on September 28th, 2009

When Reglan was first introduced in the 1980s, its future seemed promising. It was considered an effective treatment path for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diabetic gastroparesis, and a number of other ailments. But, further research into the drug’s side effects has yielded disturbing results. Many patients who have taken Reglan – or any drugs containing metoclopramide – for longer than three months have developed debilitating disorders. The alarming trend prompted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to mandate that a Black Box Reglan warning be placed on the drug’s packaging.

Unfortunately, Reglan (the branded version of the generic drug metoclopramide) continues to be used over prolonged periods. Chronic use leaves patients vulnerable to breathing problems, abdominal pain, tardive dyskinesia, and other health issues. Below, I’ll describe the latest precautions and warnings involving long-term Reglan use.

Reglan Warnings And Tardive Dyskinesia

One of the most dangerous side effects to manifest in patients using Reglan is tardive dyskinesia. It is a neurological disorder that displays through involuntary movements. Tongue protrusions, repetitive grimacing, and rapid eye blinking are characteristic of the condition. Research has suggested that taking metoclopramide for periods exceeding three months is a known root cause. However, it is also possible for the syndrome to manifest during shorter periods of use.

Unfortunately, the side effects associated with tardive dyskinesia are typically irreversible when they accompany long-term use. However, when side effects present in patients who have taken Reglan for less than twelve weeks, they occasionally dissipate with treatment.

Onset Or Aggravation Of Depression

Depression has also been linked to established cases of prolonged Reglan use. The level of depression experienced may be mild or severe depending upon dosage strength, frequency, predisposition, and other factors. Patients have reported having suicidal feelings and thoughts. In some cases, those feelings and thoughts have been the precursor to suicidal behavior or tendencies.

Use of metoclopramide can potentially trigger or aggravate symptoms related to depression. Patients who have a history of depression should inform their doctor before taking the drug. If symptoms emerge after using it, patients should immediately let their doctor know.

Symptoms Similar To Parkinson’s Disease

Many of the side effects that result from chronic Reglan use are similar to those that are characteristic of Parkinson’s disease. Like tardive dyskinesia, Parkinson’s disease is a neurological condition. Symptoms can include muscular stiffness and rigidity, persistent tremors, and Bradykinesia (slow movements). Drugs containing metoclopramide can also worsen Parkinson’s disease; patients who already suffer from the disorder should avoid them.

Other Precautions And Warnings

The packaging on Reglan medication also warns that the drug should only be taken by adults. Furthermore, geriatric patients are considered more likely to manifest certain side effects (for example, Parkinsonian symptoms) with prolonged use.

Even though Reglan has proven to be an effective short-term remedy for gastroesophageal reflux disease and other conditions, chronic use carries a potentially significant cost. Reglan Side Effects and Children

Reglan side effects in infants and children has been reported in patients receiving Reglan and the generic drug metoclopramide. Children are often prescribed metoclopramide drugs to treat acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux) and erosive esophagitis. Current package labeling warns of the Reglan dangers of the movement disorder tardive dyskinesia with chronic metoclopramide (Reglan) treatment. find out more
