Metoclopramide (the generic version of Reglan) has been prescribed for decades to help treat nausea and vomiting. Its efficacy is spotty. Some patients report that their nausea subsides after taking the drug. Others report little to no effect. The reason is largely due to the factors that trigger nausea and the drug’s ability to influence them. Please contact us for the latest Reglan tardive dyskinesia lawsuit 2010 news and information.

In the past, patients welcomed any relief, even if it was sporadic. Today, growing evidence of severe side effects demands that doctors and patients take a critical look at whether the treatment is appropriate. In this article, we’ll explore the use of metoclopramide drugs to treat nausea in a variety of circumstances. I’ll also provide a closer look at Reglan tardive dyskinesia and other potential side effects that can occur with chronic use.

Using Reglan To Relieve Morning Sickness

There are no approved medications in the U.S. for treating morning sickness. In order to provide their patients with relief from the accompanying nausea and vomiting, doctors often prescribe metoclopramide products. These drugs have been approved to treat nausea caused by anesthesia, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. They were reasonably effective when taken by pregnant women suffering from morning sickness.

Early concerns were that the drugs would expose unborn babies to harm. However, a study published in June 2009 by the New England Journal of Medicine found that babies’ in utero exposure to Reglan presented no marked increase in risk.

The danger is that morning sickness can last throughout the first trimester. Using metoclopramide products for periods exceeding 12 weeks sharply increases the likelihood that the patient will experience side effects.

Postoperative And Post-Chemotherapy Nausea

A general anesthesia is given to patients undergoing surgery. While the anesthesia is used to control pain and help the patient lose consciousness, it often causes nausea and vomiting. Even though the symptoms normally pass quickly, doctors often prescribe Reglan to treat them, especially if they are severe.

Radiation therapy and drugs administered during chemotherapy can also cause nausea and vomiting. In the case of chemotherapy, doctors will often administer Reglan injections one half-hour prior to treatment. Following a chemotherapy session, the patient will receive two injections in 2-hour intervals, and three additional injections in 3-hour intervals. The injections are usually limited to 2 mg.

The risk of developing side effects (such as tardive dyskinesia) not only rises with chronic use, but also with the number of doses taken. Patients who are taking metoclopramide products to reduce nausea caused by anesthesia and chemotherapy should limit their usage.

Reglan Side Effects

In February 2009, the FDA issued a black box warning on all metoclopramide products. This was done to warn the public about the dangers involved with taking the drug over extended periods and in high doses. Studies have shown that using Reglan for periods longer than 12 weeks dramatically increases a patient’s vulnerability to tardive dyskinesia, a neurological condition. Symptoms include involuntary lip smacking, facial grimacing, and tongue thrusting. Many patients also experience difficulty moving their limbs and fingers.

Thousands of people take Reglan to reduce their nausea and prevent vomiting. In doing so, they expose themselves to the risk of developing devastating side effects; tardive dyskinesia is merely one of them. If you are currently using metoclopramide drugs to curb nausea, speak with your doctor about switching to an alternative medication. If you have developed side effects induced by these drugs, consider speaking with a Reglan lawsuit settlements lawyer.

Only those who are currently suffering from Reglan tardive dyskinesia side effects know the despair and loneliness that accompany them. Tardive dyskinesia, Parkinsonian symptoms, and other conditions triggered by metoclopramide (the generic form of Reglan) burden the victims with severe emotional, social, and financial costs. For example, the uncontrollable facial grimacing that characterizes tardive dyskinesia has transformed many patients who were once outgoing into recluses.

Below, we’ll take a closer look at the ways in which a victim’s life can change as the result of developing metoclopramide side effects. The symptoms are usually incurable; the costs are often perpetual. To understand the impact, it’s important to place a human face on those who have been affected the most. Please contact us for the latest Reglan lawsuit news and information.

Social Costs

One of the debilitating side effects of chronic Reglan use is tardive dyskinesia, an involuntary, repetitive movement disorder. Symptoms are not limited to facial grimacing. Victims also cope with repeated tongue protrusions, rapid blinking, and lip puckering.

These symptoms are impossible to hide from others. Stares are commonplace. Patients who have developed severely pronounced symptoms have also found it difficult to maintain relationships with their friends and family. In many cases, victims have watched their spouses leave them, their children avoid them, and co-workers shun them. These are the social costs that can result from Reglan side effects.

Emotional Costs

The isolation carries a severe emotional impact. Whether it is self-driven or the result of being ostracized from peers, many patients become reclusive. They often feel embarrassed by the outward display of symptoms related to tardive dyskinesia. If they suffer from Parkinsonian symptoms, they may experience a marked loss of mobility, which prevents them from enjoying the company of others.

Drugs containing metoclopramide have already been linked to depression. The isolation that occurs from being ostracized exacerbates the issue. As a result, there is a deep emotional cost that impacts those who suffer from the side effects associated with long-term Reglan use.

Financial Costs

In addition to the social and emotional costs endured by victims of tardive dyskinesia, there are also significant financial costs. Patients who have developed the disorder often need speech therapy and rehabilitation services in order to learn how to cope with the symptoms. If the symptoms are severe and the patient is unable to care for herself, expensive long-term care may be necessary. Doctors might also prescribe medications or other treatment paths to reduce the symptoms. These too, carry a cost.

The involuntary movements, repetitive twitching, and sporadic muscle spasms can also affect the victim’s ability to perform her job. If she is forced to assume a lower position or leave her job behind entirely, the loss of income can carry a devastating financial impact.

Should You File A Reglan Lawsuit?

Metoclopramide side effects, including tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease can take a severe toll on the victim’s life. With this in mind, it is shocking that evidence suggests Reglan manufacturers were aware of the dangers involved with using their drugs. Several metoclopramide lawsuits claim that these manufacturers neglected to inform the public; they grossly misrepresented the risks; they chose not to investigate warning signs of a safety issue.

If you are suffering from the uncontrollable twitching and muscle spasms characteristic of tardive dyskinesia, contact a Reglan lawyer. It may be time to finally hold metoclopramide manufacturers accountable.

Reglan, and its generic equivalent, metoclopramide, are used by over two million people in the U.S. to treat a number of different conditions. For example, nursing mothers who are having difficulty producing an adequate supply of breast milk occasionally use the drug to stimulate production. Patients suffering from nausea related to surgery or post-chemotherapy treatment take the drug to relieve vomiting. Metoclopramide products are also prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and diabetic gastroparesis. Please contact us for the latest Reglan lawsuit information 2010 updates.

How Gastroparesis Occurs

Food and liquid normally pass from your stomach into your small intestine before being digested. Their passage is accelerated by contractions in your stomach. The contractions are controlled by the pneumogastric – or vagus – nerve.

Gastroparesis occurs when the vagus nerve is damaged and becomes less capable, or unable, to stimulate the contractions. As a result, your stomach contents pass more slowly into your small intestine, which can cause nausea and vomiting, bloating, and heartburn. One of the main reasons the vagus nerve becomes damaged is due to high blood glucose levels that are characteristic in those who suffer from diabetes. This is why the condition is often called diabetic gastroparesis.

Reglan is used to treat the disorder because the drug functions as a dopamine antagonist. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter produced within the brain that transmits signals to receptors located throughout your body, including your stomach. Metoclopramide products block the signals, thereby stimulating stomach contractions and encouraging more frequent gastric emptying.

The problem with using metoclopramide drugs to treat diabetic gastroparesis is that they do not cure the root cause: the damaged vagus nerve. As a result, patients who rely upon the drugs are tempted to use them for extended periods. Evidence strongly suggests that using Reglan for periods exceeding 90 days can lead to severe side effects, including tardive dyskinesia.

Common Reglan Side Effects After Prolonged Use

Studies show that all dopamine antagonists can potentially trigger Reglan tardive dyskinesia symtptoms. TD is a neurological disorder marked by involuntary movements and muscle spasms. Victims will manifest uncontrollable facial twitching and grimacing, tongue protrusions, lip smacking, and rapid blinking. In many cases, the patient’s extremities will twitch or jerk.

The syndrome is incurable. While treatment can be administered to reduce the severity of the symptoms, it will rarely eliminate them.

Other side effects of chronic metoclopramide use include Parkinsonian symptoms. Tremors, muscular rigidity, and a slowness of movement are common. So too, is dystonia, a related condition characterized by often-violent and painful muscle contractions. Patients might also experience bouts during which they are unable to move freely (a disorder known as akinesia).

While taking Reglan and metoclopramide drugs can help relieve symptoms associated with diabetic gastroparesis, there are significant risks involved. If you have used these products and have already developed tardive dyskinesia or other side effects, contact a Reglan lawsuit lawyer. Many metoclopramide lawsuits have already been filed to hold drug manufacturers accountable. An attorney can help you explore your options and provide you with the latest Reglan settlement news.

Metoclopramide drugs (as well as the branded version, Reglan) have been used for decades to treat symptoms related to gastroesophageal reflux disease, chemotherapy-induced nausea, and diabetic gastroparesis. Unfortunately, these drugs only represent a short-term treatment path. If you have suffered from serious side effects after using this drug please contact us for the latest Reglan settlement amount news. If patients use them for periods longer than three months, they risk developing tardive dyskinesia and other debilitating side effects. The danger of these side effects is significant enough that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a black box warning on all metoclopramide products.

What does the warning mean? And how will it protect not only the millions of people in the U.S. who currently use the drugs, but also those who will do so in the future? We’ll take a closer look at these issues below. I’ll provide an historical context for the use of Reglan and explain the details behind the FDA’s black box warning.

An Historical Perspective Of Reglan

Metoclopramide products have been used within the U.S. since 1982. At the time, the drugs were taken primarily to treat digestive problems. It wasn’t until the 1990s that disturbing signs began to emerge; people who had taken the drugs for extended periods had begun to report developing side effects. Many doctors abandoned metoclopramide in favor of another medication called Cisapride.

Like Reglan, Cisapride is a dopamine blocker. Though it was mostly prescribed to treat schizophrenia, it also relieved symptoms related to disorders within the gastrointestinal tract. However, by 1999, it was discovered that Cisapride triggered heart problems that were potentially fatal. Doctors soon abandoned the drug and returned to metoclopramide products.

In 2004, the Journal Of The American Pharmacists Association published a study that exposed the link between Reglan and tardive dyskinesia. The study confirmed what many medical professional already suspected. In 2008, the FDA mandated that metoclopramide manufacturers place a notice on their products describing the risk of side effects. The following year, the agency finally issued their black box warning.

What The FDA’s Black Box Warning Means

The black box warning is the FDA’s strongest public alert. It is reserved for prescription drugs that pose a high risk of severe – and sometimes fatal – side effects. The reason the FDA issued this warning on all metoclopramide products is due to the likelihood of patients developing tardive dyskinesia with chronic use. The agency’s mandate requires manufacturers to emphasize the risks involved with taking the drug for periods exceeding twelve weeks.

The FDA estimates that over two million people currently use Reglan and many more will do so in the future in order to treat their digestive disorders. In issuing the black box warning, the agency hopes to educate consumers about the risks.

Were Reglan Manufacturers Negligent?

Not only are these drugs linked to tardive dyskinesia and other devastating side effects, much of the suffering thus far could have been avoided. People bringing claims are arguing that the manufacturers were aware of the dangers, yet neglected to adequately inform the public. Several Reglan lawsuits have already be filed claiming that manufacturers misrepresented the risks of developing tardive dyskinesia. They further claim that drug makers chose not to update their product labeling even as reports surfaced regarding the side effects.

If you are currently suffering from metoclopramide-induced tardive dyskinesia, Parkinsonian symptoms, or other side effects, invest the time to contact a Reglan settlements lawyer.

What Is GERD?

When you eat, swallowed food goes down your throat and travels down the esophagus and then enters the stomach. As part of the digestive process, acids in the stomach break down the food so it can be absorbed.

Sometimes, food that enters the stomach backs up into the esophagus. This may happen when a valve between the esophagus and stomach may relax more than it should, allowing a mixture of food and acid to re-enter the esophagus. The acids can create that burning feeling that is thought of as heartburn.

Without treatment, the repeated exposure of acids in the esophagus can lead to irritation and inflammation of the organ, making swallowing difficult. It can also lead to esophageal ulcers and may increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

Causes of GERD

Certain foods may be more likely than others to trigger heartburn. Foods high in acid, spice, fat, garlic and onion, as well as caffeinated and alcoholic beverages can lead to and exacerbate heartburn.

Treatment and Concerns

Eliminating heartburn may be as simple as tweaking your diet and reducing the trigger foods. Avoiding smoking, eating small, frequent meals and eating at least three hours before bedtime often help reduce the symptoms of heartburn.

Over the counter medications such as antacids or acid-blockers may help provide immediate relief. However, if your symptoms persist more than twice a week, you may need medication that works full-time. Doctors may suggest prescription medicines such as histamine blockers or proton pump inhibitors to decrease acid production.

Reglan, known generically as metoclopramide, is a different type of medicine for GERD. It helps speed up the rate of digestion by increasing muscle contraction in the digestive tract. Reglan, however, has some extremely serious side effects. When used for more than about three months, which is not unusual for the treatment of a chronic condition, Reglan can cause Tardive Dyskinesia, which is a movement disorder.

People with Reglan Tardive Dyskinesia symptoms may have uncontrolled, repetitive and non- productive movement in different parts of their bodies. It may be small muscle movement as in repeated eye blinking, finger tapping or tongue movement. It may involve larger muscle groups such as the arms, shoulders, neck, legs or torso.

Sometimes symptoms of Tardive Dyskinesia can be reversed or lessened by discontinuing Reglan. However, some symptoms do not appear until after the medicine has been stopped. Unfortunately, while there are additional medicines that may reduce the symptoms of Tardive Dyskinesia, there is no cure.

If you have been diagnosed with GERD and have been prescribed Reglan or metoclopramide, talk with your doctor about possible side effects. Should you have any symptoms of Tardive Dyskinesia, contact us to discuss your legal options and the latest Reglan settlement amount news and litigation information.

Doctors prescribe drugs containing metoclopramide (the generic form of Reglan) to treat a number of ailments. The drug was approved by the FDA in the early 1980s and is currently used by over two million people. For the latest Reglan lawsuit settlements news please contact us. We are currently filing cases for patients and families throughout the United States suffering from tardive dyskinesia. Over the years, it has become increasingly clear that long-term use of metoclopramide products dramatically increases the likelihood of developing side effects, such as tardive dyskinesia. However, it is important to realize that high-dose usage also increases a patient’s vulnerability to side effects.

As a short-term treatment solution, Reglan is effective. It can relieve symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diabetic gastroparesis, and post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting. The problem is that many patients take too many doses, or they overdose. Both circumstances can trigger the onset of side effects.

This article will provide an overview of recommended Reglan dosing for GERD and other ailments. I’ll briefly describe how dosages should vary depending upon the patient’s age and the format taken (tablets, syrup, injections, etc.). The following information should only be considered a guide; always consult with your doctor.

Reglan For Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Doctors normally prescribe metoclopramide drugs for patients suffering from GERD who have not responded to other treatment paths. The recommended dosage for oral solutions (i.e. syrup and tablets) is between 10 and 15 mg. Injections should not exceed 10 mg. The drug should be taken one half hour before meals and prior to bedtime, up to four times each day. Therapy should not exceed twelve weeks.

Because elderly patients are more susceptible to Reglan side effects, they should consider limiting their dosages to 5 milligrams. Children are also more sensitive to the drug’s adverse effects. Many doctors suggest limiting their dosages, and administering between 2.5 and 5 milligrams, up to three times each day. It is worth noting that the FDA’s approval of Reglan is only for adults, not children.

Reglan For Diabetic Gastroparesis

Gastroparesis is a condition in which contractions in the stomach happen less frequently than normal. This causes the stomach’s contents to empty more slowly. The condition can be triggered by nerve damage caused by persistent high blood sugar levels characteristic of diabetes. When this is the case, it is called diabetic gastroparesis.

Normal Reglan dosing for diabetic gastroparesis is 10 mg taken orally one half hour before meals and at bedtime, up to four times daily. However, if the patient’s symptoms are severe, many doctors will initially prescribe 10 mg injections for up to ten days. Once the symptoms diminish, they will substitute tablets or syrup in the place of injections. Therapy for diabetic gastroparesis should not exceed eight weeks.

Again, children and elderly patients are more vulnerable to metoclopramide side effects. Doctors might suggest smaller doses, fewer doses each day, and limiting therapy to oral solutions.

Reglan For Nausea And Vomiting

Metoclopramide products are often administered to patients who suffer from nausea and vomiting caused by anti-cancer drugs. Dosing in this regard should be closely monitored by your doctor and will vary by patient. Body weight, age, and the severity of the patient’s nausea will all play key roles in determining an appropriate dosage.

The drug is typically injected into the patient’s vein 30 minutes prior to undergoing chemotherapy treatment or taking other anti-cancer medications. In many cases, a doctor will also administer injections every two or three hours following anti-cancer therapy until the patient’s nausea subsides.

The Danger Of Reglan Tardive Dyskinesia

The fact that Reglan is a short-term treatment solution cannot be overstated. Patients who take the drug for periods exceeding twelve weeks expose themselves to a heightened risk of developing severe side effects. Overdosing and taking doses too frequently will also increase your exposure to side effects. While the FDA has approved the use of this drug, it recently issued a black box warning on the drug. If you are already suffering from tardive dyskinesia or other side effects caused by metoclopramide drugs, it may be time to consider your legal options including filing a Reglan lawsuit.

Have you been diagnosed with a movement disorder? Following reports of patients suffering from involuntary movements there was a Reglan tardive dyskinesia FDA black box warning issued for this popular drug used to treat acid reflux. Movement disorders affect millions of people and can range from small inconveniences to devastating deterioration. Some movement disorders are inherited. Some develop over time, and still others may be caused by a side effect of medication. Here is a brief overview of a variety of movement disorders.

Inherited Movement Disorders

Some disorders have a genetic or family connection. Wilson’s disease, for example,
is caused by a genetic disorder that affects the liver. Since some of the symptoms can affect movement, it is classified as a movement disorder. Symptoms of Wilson’s disease include clumsiness, involuntary shaking, and difficulty swallowing. With Wilson’s disease, the liver does not dispense of copper that collects in the body. As a result, the excess copper damages the liver. As it travels from the liver to other organs, it can damage the kidney, brain, eyes and red blood cells. Treatments are used to decrease the amount of liver buildup in the body and to maintain liver health. If liver damage is too great, the patient may need a liver transplant.

Tourette’s syndrome is characterized by involuntary movement or sounds, called tics. The Mayo Clinic estimates that 1 – 2% of all American children have Tourette’s.
The cause is not completely understood, but scientists believe it may be caused by a gene disorder.

Developing Movement Disorders

A number of movement disorders develop over time.

Restless legs syndrome, for example, causes people to feel the need to move to relieve a constant tingly, crawly, or itchy feeling. Possibly caused by an iron deficiency, Restless legs syndrome may be treated by medicines that help other illnesses affecting muscles, like Parkinson’s disease or epilepsy. It may also be treated with muscle relaxants. Some patients suffering from Reglan tardive dyskinesia symptoms have been misdiagnosed with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s is a progressive disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain that are responsible for controlling movement. Named after the doctor who first described the disease, it is caused by an insufficient amount of dopamine in the brain. Scientists suspect that the lack of dopamine may be caused by a genetic mutation or by environmental toxins. Treatment consists of managing symptoms and slowing down deterioration, and may include medication or surgery.

Movement Disorder Caused by Side Effects

Although many movement disorders may have genetic influences, Reglan Tardive Dyskinesia side effects is different because it is entirely preventable. Some patients who have taken certain antipsychotic medications and more recently, patients who have taken Reglan (or it’s generic form of metoclopramide) for gastroesophageal reflux disease have developed this condition. Patients with Tardive Dyskinesia have uncontrolled, involuntary and repetitive movement. These movements may be confined to smaller muscle groups, such as the face, or larger groups such as the arms, legs or torso.

If you have taken Reglan, and have symptoms or a diagnosis of Tardive Dyskinesia, you may be eligible for legal compensation. We invite you to contact us to discuss your legal options. We represent all Reglan lawsuit clients on a contingency basis, which means there are no legal fees unless we win compensation in your case.

Many patients are wondering about the different Reglan tardive dyskinesia treatment option. Patients who are suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diabetic gastroparesis, and other conditions understandably want relief from the pain. Reglan – and its generic counterpart metoclopramide – are often prescribed when other forms of therapy are unsuccessful. Please contact us for the latest information on Reglan lawsuits and filing deadlines.

The drug provides relief by triggering contractions within the stomach and intestines. The contractions accelerate the stomach’s emptying process, preventing food from flowing back into the esophagus and reducing feelings of bloat and nausea.

The FDA estimates that over two million people use Reglan-type drugs today. But, taking the drug is not without risks. Both chronic and high-dose use of metoclopramide products can lead to a number of debilitating side effects. What’s more, the patient’s age, existing allergies, and other medications can also have adverse effects. Below, I’ll describe four factors you should consider before using Reglan.

#1 – Allergic Reactions

Most patients do not experience severe allergic reactions from using metoclopramide drugs. That said, there have been cases in which patients have developed hives, rashes, swelling of the tongue and throat, and dizziness. Tell your doctor if you notice these or other reactions after beginning treatment. You should also inform your doctor regarding any allergies you have toward certain foods and preservatives.

#2 – Age

Elderly patients and young children are especially susceptible to the risk of developing Reglan-induced side effects. Trembling and uncontrollable shaking will occasionally present in older patients who have taken metoclopramide drugs for long periods. This is the reason doctors often recommend smaller doses for elderly patients – to protect them from the drug’s adverse effects.

While the FDA has approved Reglan for adults, the agency has not approved the drug for children. Any therapy administered to children should be done under the close direction of your doctor. If you are a parent who is tasked with providing the medicine to your son or daughter, keep in mind they are far more sensitive to the drug than adults.

#3 – Interactions With Other Drugs

Drugs containing metoclopramide can interact poorly with other medications. For example, when taken with antipsychotic drugs, the interaction can increase the likelihood of developing extrapyramidal symptoms, such as the involuntary movements characteristic of tardive dyskinesia. Similarly, if you are already taking medicines to treat diabetes, your doctor may want to modify your Reglan doses. Metoclopramide, as a dopamine receptor blocker, can also hamper the effectiveness of drugs that are taken to treat Parkinson’s disease. Inform your doctor of all medicines you’re taking prior to using Reglan. That way, he or she can make necessary adjustments to prevent adverse interactions between the drugs.

#4 – Potential Reglan Tardive Dyskinesia Incidence

The danger of developing Reglan tardive dyskinesia and other tragic side effects increases sharply when using Reglan for periods exceeding three months. If you are taking the drug to treat symptoms related to GERD, diabetic gastroparesis, or nausea, realize that it is a short-term solution.

Chronic use can lead to uncontrollable grimacing, blinking, tongue thrusting, and lip smacking (common symptoms of tardive dyskinesia). It can lead to Parkinsonian symptoms and neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). Fatigue, insomnia, and depression are other side effects that can manifest with long-term use.

Weighing The Benefits Against The Dangers

In the end, your decision to use Reglan should be based upon an objective weighing of the benefits and risks. While the drug can provide relief for patients suffering from GERD and other conditions, it has also caused devastating side effects. In fact, the growing number of victims motivated the FDA to issue their black box warning on metoclopramide drugs in early 2009.

Discuss the dangers with your doctor. If you have already developed Reglan side effects after having taken the drug, consider contacting an attorney to review your legal options including filing a Reglan lawsuit.

A diagnosis of Reglan and tardive dyskinesia symptoms can bring both relief and devastation. At last, you have an explanation for the seemingly random muscle pulls and involuntary movements. But now, you worry—will it get better?

Tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder in which patients have uncontrolled and purposeless movements. The muscles in various parts of the body may contract and spasm at will. Unlike many movement disorders that may be caused by genetic abnormalities, Tardive Dyskinesia is a side effect of prescription medications. Certain anti-psychotic drugs and the acid reflux medicine, Reglan, are thought to cause Tardive Dyskinesia.

People who use the medicines long-term– more than three months– are at a higher risk for developing these abnormal movements.

Symptoms may develop over time. In fact, the term “tardive” means late or tardy, and the word “dyskinesia” refers to uncontrolled movement, so the disease of random movement may develop late, even after the patient has stopped taking the medicine.

Patients may first notice involuntary grimacing, or eyelid twitching. Sometimes they are reluctant to go to their doctor over minor symptoms, but then other movements begin. It may be involuntary tongue movement or neck movement, making it difficult to breathe. It may be jaw grinding, making it difficult to chew or swallow.

Unfortunately, diagnosis may be tricky since Reglan tardive dyskinesia mimics several other movement disorders. Parkinson’s disease, for example, can cause tremors. Tourette’s syndrome can cause involuntary twitches. But if a patient has taken certain medicines, like Reglan, long-term, the doctor may try to diagnose the problem using the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS).

In this exam, the physician will observe the patient for uncontrolled movement throughout the body and rate the frequency and severity of the movement, which will give insight into the severity of the disorder.

Tardive Dyskinesia is considered a rare disorder, and as a result, many of the people who suffer from it feel alone. Because it is a side effect of other medicines that were prescribed to solve another illness, some patients express frustration and helplessness with their condition. They may feel embarrassment because of the unusual movements and facial expressions they may make. They may feel anger at the doctors who first prescribed the medicines that caused the disorder.

For some people with Tardive Dyskinesia, symptoms may lessen or may disappear completely but for others, the symptoms persist. Patients with Tardive Dyskinesia have formed support groups and organizations so that they can ask questions and share concerns and treatment options.

Metoclopramide, and its branded counterpart Reglan, have been used for years to treat a number of conditions when patients have not responded to other treatment paths. For the latest Reglan class action lawsuit news and litigation updates please contact us for a free consultation. The drug has been used to relieve symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diabetic gastric stasis, and nausea. It is an effective short-term form of treatment.

The problem is that patients are often unaware of the risks to which they are exposing themselves. Chronic and high-dose use of Reglan has been linked to several side effects, including an incurable neurological condition called tardive dyskinesia.

The problem is widespread. The FDA has estimated that over two million patients are currently using metoclopramide drugs. Many of them are taking the drug for periods exceeding three months, a factor that sharply increases their vulnerability to tardive dyskinesia and other side effects. More disturbingly, evidence has surfaced over the last few years that strongly suggests metoclopramide manufacturers were negligent in many ways.

What Are The Risks Of Using Reglan?

Studies have shown that the likelihood of developing Reglan tardive dyskinesia symptoms is closely linked to the period over which a patient uses the drug and the doses taken. Those who suffer from the disorder are victims of involuntary, repetitive movements. Their tongues protrude; their eyes blink rapidly; their faces grimace uncontrollably; their lips pucker and smack. Patients cannot control these physical manifestations.

Using Reglan drugs for extended periods (longer than twelve weeks) carries additional risks. Patients might develop muscular and cogwheel rigidity similar to Parkinson’s disease. Though rare, a potentially fatal condition known as neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) can present. The risks of Reglan side effects are significant enough that the FDA issued a black box warning on the drug in February 2009.

Were Reglan Manufacturers Negligent?

A string of Reglan lawsuits have been filed individually and claim manufacturers were well aware of the dangers of their product. They claim that pharmaceutical companies didn’t adequately warn of the likelihood of developing Reglan and tardive dyskinesia. The lawsuits further claim that these companies knew doctors were prescribing the drug to their patients for extended period of time, often longer than three months.

The Enormous Costs Of Reglan Side Effects

The costs of living with Reglan tardive dyskinesia and other side effects are significant. Patients will often need hospitalization and rehabilitation services. In many cases, they will suffer long-term disability, which prevents them from working and earning a living. There is also an emotional cost. Those who endure tardive dyskinesia often become reclusive due to the embarrassing physical traits of the disorder.

A growing number of people who have taken metoclopramide products and have developed devastating side effects are exploring their legal options. They understandably want to hold manufacturers accountable. If you, or someone you love, is currently suffering from Reglan side effects, please contact us for a free no-obligation consultation and the latest news on Reglan class action lawsuit claims.
